Universal Rope Rear Main Seal Sets
We have 3 seal sets that Best Gasket makes that we use as universal rope seal sets. One of these sets will very likely fit in just about any vehicle if properly measured and rolled in correctly and if the measurements you come up with are in line with one of these three sets measurements.
.210 inches wide x 5/16 inches high x 8 inches long x 2 (Best 6340).
.210 inches wide x 3/8 inches high x 8 inches long x 2 (Best 6382S) (this set is also the same as Best 6100)
.330 inches square x 8 inches long x 2 (Best 6380S)
Each set comes with 2 ropes that are 8 inches long each, knife set, cutting guides and instructions.
To figure out the approximate height that your rear main seal rope needs to be, do this. Take a ruler that measures in 1/64th of an inch and measure across the parting line of the rear main bearing cap or retainer from bottom to bottom of seal groove. This will give you the OD of the seal groove (or ID depending how you look at it). Measure the OD of the rear main seal journal on the crankshaft. Subtract this number from the seal groove OD measurement. This number will be the total difference between the seal groove OD and the seal journal OD. Take this number and divide by 2 to get the approximate height the rope seal needs to be to contact the crankshaft seal journal. Remember to take into account the shape of the seal groove and that the rope seal will have to be rolled down to fit the groove while still having enough contact left to seal against the seal journal.
